ŠUPKÁČ Šroner & Sütő 2021

100% Welschriesling.

Grapes harvested from a vineyard planted in the Lúčnica nad Žitavou area, managed under full organic conditions. The vineyard’s foundation is rich in calcium, lending splendid acidity to the Riesling grapes.

1/3 of the grapes underwent a 2-week maceration, with the wine maturing on coarse lees without stirring until June 2022 in a 2,500-liter oak barrel.

1/3 of the grapes underwent a 5-day maceration, with the wine maturing on coarse lees without stirring until June 2022 in a 500-liter oak barrel and one egg.

1/3 underwent classic processing without maceration, the grapes were destemmed and pressed using an old press (compared to a pneumatic press, an old press minimizes damage to the grape berries, resulting in a greater preservation of their structure and character). The wine matured on coarse lees without stirring until June 2022 in 300-liter neutral oak barrels.

All three variations of vinification were blended on June 15, 2022, and after 2 weeks, the wine was gravity-filled into bottles.

Fermentation utilized indigenous yeast, unclarified and unfined, produced through traditional methods without the use of enzymes or other additives. No sulfur was used at any stage of the production process.

CHARACTERISTICS:

A delicately hazy orange-yellow color with subtle amber reflections. An intense, immediately emerging, exceptionally fresh fruity aroma, with notes of grape and white fruit, accompanied by floral touches in the background. Medium-bodied with good structure and well-integrated juicy acidity. Even though 2/3 of the wine underwent skin maceration, the winemaking expression is masterfully managed, without any disturbances; the tannins are very refined, essentially enhancing the body and structure of the wine. In the mouth, it feels as if you’ve bitten directly into a ripe grape cluster, complemented by mature apple, pear, and dried herbs. Unexpected harmony considering the skin maceration fermentation. A brilliantly executed orange ‘Vlašák’ with fantastic drinkability!

Strekov 1075

The Južnoslovenská wine region of Slovakia is renowned for producing some of the country’s most genuine and evocative wines. One winery that stands out in this area is Strekov 1075, led by the highly skilled winemaker Zsolt Sütő.

Sütő and his partner Tibor Melecsky established Strekov 1075 in 2002, initially making wines from grapes purchased from the Strekovo region. In 2004, they began planting their own vineyards and now manage 12 hectares of biologically protected vines, with eight hectares currently in production. The winery prioritizes traditional grape varieties and minimal involvement in the winemaking process, with the aim of highlighting the abundance of the Strekovo terroir through pure, additive-free wines.

Strekov 1075’s vineyards cultivate a diverse range of grapes, including Blue Portugal, St.Laurent, Blaufränkisch, Dunaj, Alibernet, Welschriesling, Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, and Devín. These grapes are used to create four distinct series of wines: Corpus, Classic, Terroir, and Special. Each series mirrors the quality and personality of the grapes and terroir, offering a variety of styles for wine aficionados to discover.

Sütő is strongly dedicated to producing genuine, evocative wines that embody the land and people of the Strekov region. The winery’s philosophy, which can be found on their website, states: “We want the person getting to know our wine to get pure, true information about us, about our outlook on life. When he drinks our wine, he should feel that we want to get to know him through our wine, but we don’t want to like each other at all costs.” This commitment to authenticity and openness is what sets Strekov 1075 apart and has gained the winery a loyal following of wine enthusiasts not just in Slovakia, but also internationally.

If you’re a fan of genuine, terroir-driven wines, be sure to give Strekov 1075 a try. With their diverse range of grapes and styles, you’re guaranteed to find a wine that speaks to you and takes you to the heart of the Južnoslovenská wine region.
